Heavy-Duty Towing Assessment: Truck, Trailer and Load Details

A semi-truck, bus, loaded trailer or other heavy vehicle requires a specific towing or recovery assessment. Vehicle size alone does not describe the job. When calling ACT at 866-597-5872, explain the truck, trailer, load and site conditions so dispatch can assess the equipment needed.

Identify the complete vehicle combination

Give the truck and trailer types, approximate dimensions and weight information available from your fleet or load documents. Say whether the trailer is loaded, empty or carrying cargo that needs special handling. Share known weight information rather than guessing. Tell dispatch about a bus, RV, unusual body configuration or attached equipment.

Explain the position and damage

• Is the vehicle upright, leaning, overturned or off a firm roadway?

• Can the wheels roll, and does the steering work?

• Is there visible collision damage or a reported load shift?

• Is the truck attached to the trailer?

• Are police or other responders managing the scene?

Use information you already have. Do not move cargo, disconnect equipment or enter an unsafe area to gather details for a quote. For a crash, injury or immediate danger, call 911 and follow responder instructions.

Describe room to approach and work

Give the exact location, direction of travel where relevant and any gate, overhead-clearance or ground-access limits. Explain whether the vehicle is at a loading dock, on a slope, in soft ground or blocking an entrance. Dispatch may need further information before confirming a service arrangement.

Confirm the destination and authorization

Provide a fleet contact who can approve the work and a receiving location that can accept the vehicle combination. Ask what the estimate covers, what remains subject to site assessment and how additional work will be authorized.
