Towing vs. Recovery Costs: What Knoxville Drivers Should Ask

Updated: Sep 5
Two vehicles can travel the same towing distance and require very different jobs. If yours is damaged, stuck or difficult to reach, tell ACT Roadside Assistance before dispatch so the equipment and estimate fit the situation.
A tow and a recovery involve different work
A vehicle that rolls and steers on a clear parking lot may be straightforward to load. A vehicle in a ditch, on a steep cabin drive, with locked wheels or with collision damage may need additional assessment, winching or equipment. The route out can matter as much as the distance to the repair shop.
Details that help dispatch assess the job
Your exact location, nearest road or landmark, and access instructions.
Vehicle make, model and size, including any load or trailer.
Whether the vehicle rolls, steers, has keys, or has visible damage.
Whether it is on pavement, soft ground, a slope, a narrow drive or inside a garage.
Your preferred destination and any access limits there.
Describe what you can observe from a safe place. Do not enter traffic or move into an unstable recovery area to collect information.
Ask what the estimate includes
Ask dispatch about towing, recovery work, additional equipment, waiting time and after-hours charges as applicable. Confirm what could change the estimate once the operator sees the vehicle. General prices previously shown in this article were examples, not ACT rates or a quote for your call.
Availability in Knoxville and nearby areas
Truck availability, traffic, distance and equipment access affect arrival estimates. After-hours work can cost substantially more. Call to discuss your location and vehicle rather than assuming an online estimate or another company’s advertised price applies.
